Box Score UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. — The No. 20-ranked Michigan Tech women's basketball team clinched home court advantage throughout the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a 78-42 win Saginaw Valley State in the final game of the 2008-09 regular season. The Huskies (22-5, 19-3 GLIAC) will carry the No. 1 seed into the league tournament which begins Tuesday (Mar. 3).
Tech started the game on a good note and never looked back. The Huskies jumped out to a 15-5 lead and pushed that margin to 36-17 by halftime as Lisa Staehlin banked in a layup at the first half buzzer.
Saginaw Valley (3-24, 2-20 GLIAC) dominated the first half glass with the help of 11 offensive boards. Tech held them to just six second chance points, though.
In the second half, Michigan Tech quickly pushed the margin to 50-20 by making four of its first five shots in the stanza. The lead grew to 38 points by the final horn.
Katie Wysocky turned in her 14th double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead all players in both categories. Nine other Huskies scored points in the game led by Staehlin, Sarah Stream and Tara Ferris who had eight apiece.
"We hoped to come out aggressively and we did that," said head coach John Barnes. "I thought our defense was sharper in the second half, and we were able to get our bench a lot of minutes."
Michigan Tech's 2008-09 regular season is complete. The Huskies will now host Northern Michigan on Tuesday (Mar. 3) in a GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal game. Tipoff at the SDC Gym is slated for 6 p.m.
Notes: Katie Zimmerman broke her own school record for 3-pointers made in a season with her 79th on her first and only make of the day ... Michigan Tech will take the No. 1 seed into the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 2001, when the tournament was played at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids, Mich.
