Box Score
HOUGHTON, Mich. Katie
Wysocky and Sarah Stream both scored career highs in points
for the 16th-ranked Michigan Tech women's basketball team, but it
was not enough in a 98-91 loss to No. 5 Hillsdale today at the SDC
Gym. The visiting Chargers committed just three turnovers and held
a 36-25 rebounding advantage to come away victorious in a battle of
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference divisional
leaders.
The two teams are now tied with 17-3 league records in the race for
home-court advantage in the GLIAC Tournament. If they finish with
the same conference slate, the Huskies would have the tiebreaker
over the Chargers in virtually every scenario.
Tech never trailed in the opening 20 minutes as it shot 58 percent
from the field. The final sequence of plays in the half provided
fireworks for the season-best crowd of 1,919 in attendance.
Stream hit an off-balance, double-pump 3-pointer as she was being
fouled with 1.8 left on the clock. She made the free throw for a
45-36 Huskies' advantage. Hillsdale answered with a circus play of
its own by making a heave from the sideline behind the halfcourt
stripe at the buzzer.
Hillsdale quickly erased the 45-39 halftime deficit with a 18-5 run
in the first six minutes of the second stanza. The Chargers
maintained the lead until a Stream 3-pointer knotted the game at 69
with 8:21 to go. The score remained close until HC's Katie Eckinger
pushed the gap to 84-77 with a 3-pointer at 3:34. The Chargers
scored at least one point on 11 straight possessions to finish off
the game.
"They played great," said head coach John
Barnes. "Every one of their players played well and made
shots.
We held (Hillsdale's Katie) Cezat to nine in the first half. She
had 21 in the second, and the rest of their team continued to play
as well."
Normally for Tech, a 56 percent shooting game and just seven
turnovers is a recipe for success. It wasn't enough today as
Hillsdale matched those marks and added a plus-11 rebound
margin.
Wysocky tallied 27 points and 11 rebounds for her 12th
double-double of the season. She surpassed her previous career best
of 26 by making 12-of-19 field goals.
Stream matched her career high with 24 points including her 1,000th
career point with her first bucket of the game, a short jumper in
the lane.
Two other Huskies scored in double figures. Katie
Zimmerman had 15 and Danae Danen added 11.
Cezat, who entered the game as the nation's second-leading scorer,
tallied a game-high 30 points despite having zero through the first
nine minutes. She also led all players in rebounds with 18.
Michigan Tech will play its final two regular season games on the
road beginning Thursday (Feb. 26) at Lake Superior State.
Notes: Tech's lone senior, Alicia
Schneider, started the game and was also honored in a ceremony
following the contest ... Stream became the 18th Huskies' women's
basketball player to reach the 1,000-point milestone. She finished
the game with 1,023 points.
