SPRINGBORN NEEDS NINE POINTS FOR 1,000
Entering Thursday's (Feb. 19) game vs. No. 1 Findlay, senior Robby
Springborn needs nine points for 1,000 in his career. The 5-11
guard has tallied a team-high 312 points in 23 games this year for
a scoring average of 13.6. Springborn will be the 22nd player in
school history with 1,000 points. Tim
Strom (2004-08) is the most recent member of the 1,000-point
club at Michigan Tech. He accomplished the feat Jan. 17, 2008.
HOJNACKI DIALING LONG DISTANCE
Freshman Mike Hojnacki made a combined 8-of-12 3-pointers
in two games last week to improve his season 3-point percentage to
a team-leading 42.9. His overall field goal percentage of 47.6 is
second on the team trailing only Fedrick
Bowe (53.3). Hojnacki scored a combined 33 points during the
week and has raised his season scoring average to 8.0 points per
game fourth best on the team. The 6-7 forward has scored at
least 10 points eight times since Jan. 3.
BOWE SCORES 500TH, BOARDS 500TH
Senior Fedrick Bowe eclipsed both the 500-point and
500-rebound barriers during last week's play. The 6-5 forward
turned in a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds at Ferris
State last Thursday (Feb. 12) and followed up with 12 points and
five boards at Grand Valley State Saturday (Feb. 14). Bowe's career
totals now stand at 515 points and 501 rebounds. Only 22 other
players in Michigan Tech men's basketball history have surpassed
the 500-rebound plateau.
ROAD SWEET ROAD
Michigan Tech went 3-1 in away games over the last two
weeks to improve its road record to 6-5. The Huskies are 6-6 in
home games. They have defied normalcy by shooting a better field
goal percentage away from the SDC Gym including a remarkable 10
percent better from 3-point range on other teams' floors. Of
course, Tech is finishing up a 14-game home schedule this weekend
the most regular season home tilts in school history.
FREE THROW SUCCESS
Michigan Tech ranks second in the GLIAC and ranks 16th in
NCAA Division II in free throw accuracy. The Huskies have made
374-of-500 foul shots this season for a 74.8 percent clip. Robby
Springborn has been a large part of that success with a 89.6
percent rate second best in the GLIAC and fifth in the
country. Don Fowler (85.4), Matt
Gaedke (83.3) and Georgio Holt (80.4) are also over 80
percent on the year.
COACH KEVIN LUKE
Coach Kevin Luke (Northern Michigan, 82) is in
his 15th season guiding the Michigan Tech men's basketball program.
He is a four-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Coach of the Year (1994-95, 1997-98, 2001-02, 2003-04) and was the
2002-03 National Coach of the Year. Luke is the winningest coach in
Michigan Tech history with a 272-156 record (.636 pct).
HISTORY VS. FINDLAY AND HILLSDALE
Findlay holds a 9-7 edge in the all-time series with
Michigan Tech thanks to an 83-69 victory in Findlay earlier this
season (Jan. 17). Hillsdale also owns a series edge over Tech
25-22. The Huskies claimed a 69-61 triumph at Hillsdale a month ago
(Jan. 15). See below for complete series history.
TIDBITS
Tech owns season sweeps of Northwood, Ashland and Tiffin.
The Huskies have been swept by only Grand Valley State and Northern
Michigan ... Robby Springborn and Tech women's player Sarah
Stream could both score their 1,000th career point on the same
night. Interestingly, Tech had a player from each team (Catherine
Rottier and Tim Strom) tally 1,000 points on the same night a
year ago (Jan. 17).
