Box Score
ALLENDALE, Mich. The Michigan Tech women's basketball
team snapped a two-game skid with an important Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory today at Grand Valley
State. The final score of 65-56 was not at all indicative of the
game, which featured 10 lead changes.
Tech (19-4 overall and 16-2 in the league) widened its lead in the
GLIAC North Division to three games over the Lakers (17-6, 13-5)
with the win.
The Huskies outscored GVSU by eight in the second half thanks an
11-of-17 mark at the foul line, just two turnovers and two
3-pointers from Katie Zimmerman in the final three minutes.
Grand Valley turned a 27-26 halftime deficit into a four-point lead
just a minute into the second half. The Lakers' hot hand from
3-point range continued throughout most of the second stanza as
they made five of their first nine.
The score was tied at 45 at the 10-minute mark before the Huskies
went on an 8-0 run. The Black and Gold didn't allow a point for
more than four minutes during the spurt.
Grand Valley State closed the margin to 53-50 with under five
minutes to play, and it had two chances to tie the game. Tech's
defense came up with two straight stops before Katie
Wysocky's layup wided the margin to five.
Zimmerman's 3-pointer on a designed play with 2:41 to play pushed
the Huskies' lead to six. Another triple from Zimmerman made it a
seven-point gap under a minute to go. The junior from Green Bay
then iced the win at the free throw line to account for the final
count of 65-56.
"This was a big win for us," said head coach John
Barnes. "There was a lot of pressure on us after the last two
games, and we came out and played Michigan Tech basketball.
"We shot pretty well, didn't turn it over and played strong
defense."
The Katies (Wysocky and Zimmerman) combined for 35 of Tech's 65
points. Wysocky tallied 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists
and three steals in a very good all-around game. Zimmerman notched
16 points on 4-of-6 3-point shooting and 4-of-4 free throws. Danae
Danen also reached twin figures in points with 13 to go with
six rebounds and a game-high four blocks.
Tech finished at 49 percent from the field including 8-of-19 (42
percent) from behind the arc. GVSU shot 40 percent from the floor
including 11-of-25 (44 percent) from long range. The Huskies forced
17 Lakers turnovers while committing just 10 in the contest.
Michigan Tech will go for its 20th win on the season when it hosts
Findlay next Thursday (Feb. 22) at 5:30 p.m.
