ST. CLOUD, Minn. - St. Cloud State completed the weekend sweep
of the Michigan Tech hockey team with a 4-2 WCHA win Saturday (Feb.
14) at the National Hockey Center. Special teams played a major
role in the game with the two teams scoring the first four goals on
the power play.
"There is no question they are good on the power play," said head
coach Jamie Russell. "They have skilled players and
they move it around awfully well. I don't think our kids got a real
fair shake in this building with three five-on-three opportunities.
By that time the game is decided."
SCSU opened the scoring in the game with a goal by freshman
Nicholas Rioux at 8:39 of the opening period. Freshman Jordy
Christian fired a shot on net that was tipped in by Rioux for his
third goal of the season on the power play.
Sophomore Garrett Roe took advantage of a five-on-three opportunity
for his 14th goal of the season, second most on the team. He beat
Michigan Tech freshman goalie Josh
Robinson with a wrist shot on the glove side.
Tech cut the deficit to one on its first power play chance of the
night. Senior Geoff Kinrade sent a shot on net that rang off
the post before sophomore Jordan
Baker put home the easy rebound for the Huskies. Freshman Brett
Olson also assisted on the goal.
SCSU junior Garrett Raboin scored the lone goal in the second
period at 4:46 on another five-on-three opportunity. Robinson made
the save on the initial shot by Raboin but the puck went straight
back to Raboin who buried it for his 12th goal of the season.
Baker picked up his second goal of the game once again on an assist
by Kinrade. Baker tipped a shot by Kinrade past junior Jase
Weslosky for his team-leading 13th goal of the season at 7:40 of
the third period. Baker finished with three goals on the weekend
against St. Cloud State.
Sophomore Aaron Marvin scored the final goal for SCSU on a break
away at 17:35 of the third period.
Tech pulled Robinson with 1:44 remaining for the extra attacker.
Senior Alex Gagne nearly brought the Huskies to within
one goal when his shot rang out off the pipe with 1:35
remaining.
Both teams finished the night 50% on the power play with St. Cloud
State finishing three-for-six and Tech one-for-two.
Robinson (3-7-1) made 31 saves on 35 shots in his second straight
start for Michigan Tech.
Weslosky (15-9-1) made 16 saves on 18 shots for SCSU.
Michigan Tech will host Minnesota Duluth next weekend (Feb. 20-21)
for a pair of WCHA games.
