BIG RAPIDS, Mich. The No. 12-ranked Michigan Tech women's
basketball team battled cold shooting for the second straight game
and suffered its second consecutive loss. Ferris State defended its
home court in a 67-62 decision, causing the Huskies to fall to 18-4
overall and 15-2 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
play.
Tech battled through a tight first half before finally taking a
six-point lead on back-to-back 3-pointers from Katie
Zimmerman and Lucy Dernovsek. The Black and Gold entered the
locker room with a 31-27 lead.
Ferris State (8-13, 6-11 GLIAC) came out of the intermission to
take a 41-40 lead with 14:38 to play. The lead traded hands several
times before FSU's Teghan Thelen got hot. She tallied seven
straight points as the hosts built up a seven-point advantage.
Katie Wysocky pulled Tech back within 63-60 at
the 3:14 mark with a putback layup. After a FSU jumper at 2:31, no
one scored until Wysocky made another layup with 1:18 to go.
Schneider and Zimmerman both missed 3-pointers that could have tied
the game in the final minute. Thelen's free throws with four
seconds left provided the final margin.
"We're just not shooting the ball very well right now," said head
coach John Barnes. "I felt like we missed a lot of wide
open shots we don't normally miss. Combine that with a couple of
defensive lapses, and we just didn't play a strong enough
game."
Wysocky scored 20 points for the second straight game to go with a
team-high eight rebounds. She moved into third place on Tech's
all-time rebounding chart in the first half and finished the
contest with 706 career boards.
Zimmerman (11 points) and Danen (10) were the only other players in
double figures for Tech, which shot 34 percent from the field and
26 percent (5-of-19) from behind the arc.
FSU, which was led by Thelen's 22 points, connected on 48 percent
of its field goals.
Michigan Tech will finish out its four-game road swing with a
Saturday (Feb. 14) afternoon contest at Grand Valley State. Tipoff
is slated for 1 p.m.
