DETROIT - Danae Danen scored her
1,000th career point in helping the Michigan Tech women's
basketball team to a 84-46 victory at Wayne State today. The 6-0
senior center posted a game-high 16 points in the game, and the
Huskies improved to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
Tech built up its lead in the opening half using a 13-0 run. Maria
Kasza, Katie Wysocky and Sarah
Stream all hit 3-pointers during the spurt that left Tech on
top 16-6. The Black and Gold ended the half with a 39-20
margin.
Danen scored her 1,000th-career point at the 17:53 mark of the
second half on a nice pass from Wysocky. The bucket was part of a
7-2 start to the second half. The Huskies' lead increased to as
many as 41 before the final margin of 38.
Tech's bench turned in 38 of its 84 points led by freshman Sam
Hoyt. The 5-5 guard tied for game-high scoring honors with a
career-high 16 points. Senior Maria Kasza also reached
double figures off the bench with 11 points to go with six
rebounds.
Wysocky, who played just 22 minutes, posted 12 points, six
rebounds, five assists and three blocks in an all-around solid
performance.
Michigan Tech limited the Warriors to just 31 percent field goal
shooting and forced 16 turnovers. Meanwhile, the Huskies committed
just four turnovers in the contest with 22 assists. They also shot
47 percent from the floor.
"This was a great game all the way around for us," said head coach
John Barnes. "The players
were ready to go. We took care of the basketball, got points inside
and made open shots from outside."
Michigan Tech will have 10 days off before hosting Concordia-St.
Paul in non-conference action on Tuesday, Dec. 29. Tipoff at the
SDC Gym is slated for 5:30 p.m.
Notes: Danen joins current teammates Katie Wysocky (1,469 career
points) and Sarah Stream (1,201) in the
1,000-point club. Katie Zimmerman needs 67
more points to be the fourth starter with 1,000.
