HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech scored the first two goals but
Minnesota scored the next three to claim a 3-2 WCHA win in front of
2,184 fans at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena Friday (Dec. 11).
Tech (3-12-0, 2-11-0) finished a perfect two-for-two on the power
play and held Minnesota (7-9-1, 5-7-1) one-for-four on the
man-advantage.
"I thought we had a number of opportunities where we won the battle
on the wall and we had a number of two on ones and I don't think we
executed well," said head coach Jamie Russell. "You know
they're going two guys on the fore check. You hit it by them and
you win the battle of the boards. You get a second guy over there
for support and you get an odd man rush."
Sophomore Brett Olson opened the
scoring for the Huskies with a power play goal through traffic at
7:25 of the first period. Olson was assisted on the goal by a pair
of freshman, Evan
Witt and Steven
Seigo.
On Tech's second goal, senior John Kivisto sent a sharp
pass to junior Jordan Baker who scored his
third goal of the season after beating Minnesota junior Alex Kangas
between the legs. All three of Baker's goals this season have come
on the power play. Senior Drew Dobson also assisted on
the goal at 3:51 of the second period.
UM junior forward Mike Hoeffel scored a power play goal at 9:12 and
an even strength goal at 18:15 of the second period to tie the game
at 2-2.
Minnesota sophomore Jordan Schroeder chipped a puck over the head
of freshman Kevin
Genoe to junior Patrick White who swatted the puck out of the
air for the game-winning goal with 26 seconds remaining.
Kangas finished with 23 saves for the Gophers and Genoe ended the
night with 23.
The Huskies and Gophers will face-off for the final time in the
regular season Saturday (Dec. 12) at 7:07 p.m.
