HOUGHTON, Mich. - Sophomore Brett Olson scored the
game-winning goal short handed at 5:48 of the third period to lift
Michigan Tech to a 3-1 win over St. Cloud State Friday (Oct. 30).
The Superior, Wis., native has tallied nine points in five games
this season. Sophomore Ricky Doriott assisted on
the goal. With the win, Tech improves to 2-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in
the WCHA while St. Cloud falls to 2-2-3, 1-0-2.
Senior John Kivisto opened the
scoring with his first goal of the season and the second of his
career when he sent a long shot from the blue line through traffic
at 10:23 of the second period.
Garrett Roe was able to tie things up for SCSU after he found the
net at 14:38 for his second goal of the season. He was assisted by
Tony Mosey and Taylor Johnson.
Olson picked up his second point of the evening thanks to an assist
after junior Alex MacLeod scored an empty
net goal off his rebound with seven seconds remaining. Senior Malcolm
Gwilliam was also credited with an assist. It was the first
empty net goal by a Michigan Tech player since Gwilliam
scored one in a 4-2 against Alaska Anchorage on Oct. 31, 2008.
Freshman Kevin
Genoe recorded his first win of the season (1-1-0) after making
26 saves on 27 shots.
On the other end, Mike Lee (1-1-3) made 20 saves and gave up two
goals for SCSU.
The two teams will face-off again tomorrow (Oct. 31) at 7:07
p.m.
