COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado College scored three power
play goals to claim a 4-1 win over Michigan Tech in WCHA play at
World Arena Friday (Oct. 23). Tech (1-2-0, 0-1-0) and Colorado
College (3-1-1, 1-2-0) each finished with 34 shots on the
night.
"You are not going to win too many hockey games giving up three
power play goals," said head coach Jamie Russell. "There were
some definite positives. We created some offense, we didn't finish
our chances like we needed too."
The Tigers scored their first goal of the evening at 9:22 of the
first period. Junior Tyler Johnson sent a pass from the top of the
left circle to senior Bill Sweatt who was standing on the top of
the right circle. Sweatt then beat sophomore Josh Robinson low on
the glove side for his third goal of the season. Junior Ryan Lowery
also picked up an assist on the goal.
Sophomore Brett Olson nearly tied the
game at 1-1 with a shot off the pipe three minutes into the second
period.
A pair of penalties by the Huskies gave the Tigers a five-on-three
advantage midway through the second period. Freshman Rylan Schwartz
scored from the back post after receiving a pass from Sweatt.
The Huskies would get one back when Olson, who just came out of the
penalty box, passed the puck to senior Malcolm Gwilliam who notched
his second goal of the season at 12:25 of the middle period.
Freshman Anthony
Schooley recorded his first career point with an assist on the
goal.
Lowery picked up his second point of the game by scoring CC's third
power play goal from assists by Sweatt and Johnson at 8:11 of the
third period.
Tech pulled Robinson with just over three minutes remaining but was
unable to capitalize. Sweatt picked up his fourth point of the
evening with an assist on an empty net goal by freshman William
Rapuzzi at 17:54.
Freshman Joe Howe (3-0-1) made 33 saves in the win while Robinson
(1-1-0) finished with 30.
"I thought Josh Robinson played really
well. I couldn't fault him too much on the goals. I thought he made
a number of big saves for us. "
The teams will close out the series Saturday (Oct. 24). Game time
is set for 9:07 Eastern.
