MIDLAND, Mich. - Michigan Tech hasn't played many matches in the
familiar confines of the SDC Gym this season, but that hasn't kept
them from being victorious in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference. The group of road warriors picked up another
victory against GLIAC South rival Northwood by a score of 3-1. It
was a homecoming of sorts for head coach Orlando Gonzalez, who was
the assistant coach for the Timberwolves last season. It was the
hosts who came out swinging first, taking set one by a score of
25-21. It was then that the luck ran out for the hosts, as Tech won
the next three sets to take the match.
"We didn't make mistakes at critical times," said Gonzalez. "We
were able to capitalize on their mistakes tonight."
A trio of Tech players tallied double digits in the kills
column, led by senior Alicia
Schneider. The 5-11 middle blocker racked up 12 kills, and did
it with a .474 attack percentage. She also had a service ace and
four block assists in the match.
"Alicia came off of the bench, and really did well tonight,"
stated Gonzalez. "She blocked really well and got on track
offensively in a big way."
Sophomore Kristine Sexton kept up her
stellar brand of play by tallying 11 kills, one block solo and two
block assists on the evening. Senior Veronica Armstrong rounded
out the main scoring trio for the Huskies by garnering 10 kills to
go along with eight digs during the match.
Freshman Madeline
Haben led the way in the assists category once again for the
Black and Gold with 43 during the four set match. Haben also added
eight digs, three service aces, and a pair of block assists in a
well rounded game.
The Timberwolves were led by junior Jolyn Timms who had 14
kills, an assist, and eight digs.
Michigan Tech dominted Northwood in the blocks category, with a
7-2 advantage over the hosts.
Tech will head to Detroit on Saturday to face off against the
Warriors of Wayne State. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
