Box Score
HOUGHTON, Mich. The No. 16 Michigan Tech women's
basketball team may have turned in its most complete performance of
the season in a 75-39 victory over Ashland today at the SDC Gym.
Thanks to six first half 3-pointers from Katie
Zimmerman, the Huskies (10-2 overall and 7-0 in the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) led by 16 at the break. With
23 points from its bench, Tech outscored the visitors by 20 in the
second half to defeat the Eagles (9-3, 5-2 GLIAC).
The score was 19-15 with 5:43 left in the half before the hosts
closed on a 14-2 run. Zimmerman drained three straight triples
during the stretch to send the Huskies into the lockerroom up
33-17.
The margin continued to grow throughout the second half.
Three-pointers on three consecutive trips down the floor pushed the
gap to 32 with 11:05 to play and seemed to put the game away.
Tech's defense limited the Ashland offense to 39 points just
over half of their average of 74. The Eagles shot 27 percent from
the field including 8 percent from behind the arc. Meanwhile, the
Huskies compiled 21 assists with just seven turnovers.
"Ashland's a good team that had an off night," said head coach John
Barnes. "I think our defense had something to do with that.
"Offensively, we took care of the basketball and found the open
person all night."
Zimmerman, who tied a school record with the six 3-pointers, led
all scorers with 18 points. Danae
Danen added 15 points and four blocks. Katie
Wysocky moved over the 600-rebound mark with 12 boards
all in the first half. She also dished out five assists and scored
eight points to close within 13 of 1,000 points for her career.
All 11 available Huskies played and 10 scored in the game as Tech's
bench outscored AU's 27-9.
Notes: Zimmerman became the seventh different player to make six
3-pointers in a game. The most recent was Maria Schneider who had
six 3-pointers at Gannon on Feb. 2, 2006 ... Sarah
Stream tied a career high with six assists in the game ... Tech
has defeated Ashland by a combined 64 points in the last two
meetings between the schools. The Huskies beat the Eagles 81-53 in
the GLIAC Championship game at the SDC Gym last March.
