HOUGHTON, Mich. A first-half run gave the No. 10 Michigan
Tech women's basketball team a big lead it would not relinquish in
an 80-70 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory
over Ferris State today at the SDC Gym. The Huskies led by 20 at
halftime en route to improving to 17-2 overall. They remain
undefeated at 14-0 in league play.
The score was tied a 9-all less than four minutes into the game
before the Huskies exploded on a 21-4 run. Katie Wysocky
jumpstarted the run with a 3-pointer. Minutes later, Sarah Stream
scored on three straight drives before back-to-back 3-pointers from
Katie Zimmerman.
Tara Ferris' triple in the half's closing seconds gave the hosts a
46-26 margin at the break.
Tech maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second stanza.
Ferris State made shots in the final minutes as part of a 64
percent shooting half to close within 10 by the end of the
contest.
Four Huskies scored in double figures led by Wysocky's game-high 18
points. Stream tallied 17 points and four assists. Danae Danen (14)
and Ferris (12) were the others. Ferris' season high came with
9-of-12 free throw shooting and a make on her only field goal
attempt the 3-pointer right before half.
The Bulldogs maintained a 27-20 rebounding edge and were only the
second team to shoot over 50 percent against the Huskies all
season. Their 54 percent mark was the best given up by Tech all
year.
Tech countered that with 57 percent shooting of its own and 19
makes on 25 trips to the free throw line. The Black and Gold also
won the turnover battle, committing just 10 to FSU's 18.
"We did a good job of being aggressive in the first half," said
head coach John Barnes. "I wasn't happy that we let them cut our
lead in the second half, but it's nice to have the win.
"We'll need to bring the intensity next week as we hit the
road."
Michigan Tech will begin a four-game road trip on Thursday (Feb. 5)
when makes its first-ever appearance at Tiffin. The game against
the GLIAC newcomer will tip off at 6 p.m.
Notes: Tech is undefeated in 2009 with nine straight wins that
began with a 69-60 triumph at Northern Michigan on Jan. 3 ... The
Huskies have a three-game lead in the GLIAC North Division thanks
to Northern Michigan's 81-68 win over Grand Valley State today ...
Michigan Tech could be ranked No. 1 in the Midwest Region next
week. The Huskies started the week No. 2 in the region and won both
of its games while No. 1 Northern Kentucky went 1-1.
