Box Score

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Katie Zimmerman scored a career-high 23 points and Katie Wysocky tallied 21 more to lift the No. 10-ranked Michigan Tech women's basketball team to a 74-63 win over No. 20 Grand Valley State in front of 1,011 fans tonight at the SDC Gym. With the win, the Huskies improve to 16-2 overall and 13-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and take a commanding two-game lead in the GLIAC North Division standings.

"This was a hard-fought win," said head coach John Barnes. "Grand Valley really defended us well, especially in the middle part of the game. We settled down and were able to execute our sets down the stretch, and that got us the win."

The Huskies came out firing, hitting five of its first six 3-point attempts for a 25-11 lead eight minutes into the game. The Lakers' defense stiffened, and the visitors scored the final eight points of the half before going into the lockerroom down just 33-31.

GVSU (15-3, 11-2 GLIAC) started the second half on a 12-7 run to grab a 43-40 advantage with 12:33 to play. The Lakers stayed up 46-45 at the 10-minute mark before Tech turned the tables. Zimmerman hit three 3-pointers in a two-minute span during a 13-2 run. That opened up the inside game where Danae Danen and Wysocky combined for four layups to push the margin to 16 under two minutes. Zimmerman made six straight free throws in the final minute to ice the win.

Michigan Tech ripped the nets at 65 percent from the field in the second half to finish the game at 52 percent. Grand Valley took 21 more shots in the game, but made just 35 percent from the floor.

Zimmerman connected on 5-of-8 3-pointers and all eight of her free throws in the 23-point effort. Wysocky added a game-high 14 rebounds and five assists to her 21 points. Danen, who tied a career-high with five blocks, finished with 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting. The Huskies trio accounted for 62 of the team's 74 points.

Tech had assists on 24 of its 26 field goals, thanks in large part to Sarah Stream's career-high 10.

Michigan Tech will look to run its winning streak to nine games on Saturday (Jan. 31) when it hosts Ferris State at 1 p.m.
