NO. 15 HUSKIES ESCAPE FINDLAY WITH 71-70 WIN WITH ZIMMERMAN'S FREE THROWS

Box Score

FINDLAY, Ohio — Katie Zimmerman sank two free throws with nine seconds to play, and the Michigan Tech defense held firm in the final moments to give the No. 15-ranked women's basketball Huskies a 71-70 victory at Findlay today. Tech remained undefeated in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at 10-0 and improved to 13-2 overall with the win.

"I'm happy to get out of here with a win," said head coach John Barnes. "Findlay is a great team, but I think we had a let down after Thursday's game (a 54-52 win at No. 4 Hillsdale)."

"Zimm made the free throws, and our defense stepped up when we needed it to. Danae (Danen) was waiting for the drive and made the block."

Michigan Tech held a 34-28 halftime lead, but the Oilers (8-7, 3-7 GLIAC) battled back into a 51-50 lead with 10 minutes to play. The Huskies answered with an 8-0 run for a 58-51 advantage.

Findlay stayed within striking range, thanks mainly to the play of Audra Mihalic. The Oiler point guard tallied 24 points in the second half

Tech held a 69-67 edge before Ashley Westenbarger's 3-pointer put the hosts in front with 27 seconds to go.

Sarah Stream missed a go-ahead jumper with :11 on the clock, but the rebound went out of bounds off a Findlay player. Stream then inbounded the ball to Zimmerman, who was fouled. She made both free throws and UF put the ball into Mihalic's hands.

Mihalic drove the court and put up layup with three seconds left. Danen made the block and the ball was tipped around the Findlay paint until the final horn.

Danen finished with a game-high 20 points while Stream added 19. Katie Wysocky was held to just seven points, but pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to go with two steals.

Shooting percentages were nearly equal in the game and Oilers held a 34-27 rebounding advantage. The Huskies helped their own cause by committing just six turnovers.

Findlay's Mihalic finished with 32 points to lead all scorers.

Michigan Tech will return home for its next four games. The Huskies will host Lake Superior State on Thursday (Jan. 22) at 5:30 p.m. at the SDC Gym.
