FINDLAY, Ohio Michigan Tech made a late run to close
within 12 but the No. 1-ranked Findlay Oilers came away with an
83-69 victory at Croy Gymnasium today. The hosts improved to 14-0
overall and 10-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference with the win while the Huskies fell to 9-6 overall and
6-4 in the league.
Findlay opened the game by scoring the first 16 points of the
contest. Tech battled its way back to within 10 at the 1:30 mark of
the half but turned the ball over three times and went into
halftime trailing 44-28.
UF expanded its lead to as many as 24 in the second half but the
Huskies kept working. Three-pointers on three straight possessions
two by Mike Hojnacki and one by Sean Geary pulled the
Black and Gold within 14. Tech would trim the deficit to 12 in the
final minute before the final score of 83-69.
The Oilers shot 53 percent from the floor compared to 41 percent
for the Huskies. Tech held a 33-31 rebounding advantage, but
committed 17 turnovers for the game to just 11 by the hosts.
Geary finished with game-high 17 points on 7-of-9 field goal
shooting. Hojnacki added 10 points, four rebounds and three blocks.
Robby Springborn and Don Fowler also reached double figures in
points for Tech with 13 and 11, respectively.
Findlay also had four players in double figures led by Nathan Hyde,
who hit four treys and was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field.
Michigan Tech will return home for its next four games starting
Thursday (Jan. 22). Lake Superior State will come to the SDC Gym
for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
