HOUGHTON, Mich. The Michigan Tech women's basketball team
held serve against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
newcomer Tiffin today with an 83-59 victory at the SDC Gym. Junior
forward Katie Wysocky scored a game-high 21 points
including the 1,000th of her career to help the No. 16-ranked
Huskies remain undefeated in the league at 8-0 and improve to 11-2
overall.
Junior Danae Danen added 18 points and two others
reached double figures in a balanced Tech scoring attack.
Tiffin (4-9, 3-5 GLIAC) started the game very well. The visiting
Dragons held a 16-6 lead seven minutes into the contest before the
Black and Gold got on track. The Huskies outscored their foes 32-12
through the rest of the period and went into halftime up 38-28. Katie
Zimmerman's 3-pointer with three seconds left in the half
finished off the run.
Michigan Tech (11-2, 8-0 GLIAC) scored the first five points of the
second half with a jumper from Tara
Ferris and a Wysocky 3-pointer. The trey at 17:53 gave the
Whitefish Bay, Wis., product 1,000 points for her career.
The Huskies continued to expand the margin through the final horn,
and nine different players collected points in the game.
"Tiffin came out aggressively," said head coach John
Barnes. "Once we were able to contain them, we turned things
around. We went from being down 10 to up 10 by half, then started
the second half well."
Wysocky's 21 points came with a career-high-tying four 3-pointers.
She also added six rebounds and a pair of steals.
"You know what you're going with Katie (Wysocky)," said Barnes.
"You can count on 12 to 16 points and six to 10 rebounds every
night."
Lisa Staehlin posted 15 points in just 13 minutes
off the bench. Zimmerman added 12 points all on 3-pointers.
Her 4-of-6 mark today made her 10-of-14 from behind the arc on the
weekend.
Tech shot 53 percent from the floor and 56 percent from behind the
arc. The Huskies also held a 34-26 rebounding advantage.
Tiffin cashed in on 52 percent of its field goal attempts in the
second half to conclude the game at 44 percent.
Michigan Tech will play on the road at No. 7 Hillsdale next
Thursday (Jan. 15) in a battle of GLIAC division leaders. Tipoff in
Hillsdale, Mich., is slated for 6 p.m.
Notes: Wysocky joins 15 other players with 1,000 career points.
Only six others have both 1,000 points and 600 rebounds. Wysocky's
totals currently stand at 1,008 and 615.
