HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Michigan Tech volleyball team downed
previously undefeated Saginaw Valley State, 3-1, in the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Conference opener for both schools Friday (Sept.
12). The Huskies (6-3, 1-0 GLIAC) have never lost to the Cardinals
(8-1, 0-1 GLIAC) in Houghton.
Tech took the first two sets (25-19, 27-25) thanks in large part to
a strong hitting percentage. Saginaw rallied to claim set two
(25-17) but Tech walked away with the fourth set (25-19) to take
the match.
"We were a little nervous tonight playing at home for the first
time," said head coach Krista Mikesch. "We settled in during set
two but we relaxed too much in set three. It was nice to see us
rebound in set four and play with more discipline."
The Huskies also finished with 11.0 blocks to just 1.0 by the
Cardinals. Tech has out blocked its opponents 102.0 to 55.0 this
season.
Seniors Jen Jung and Veronica
Armstrong, who leads the team with 110 kills this season, each
recorded 14 kills to lead the Huskies. Jung also recorded four
blocks while Armstrong chipped in nine digs.
Sophomore Kaitlin Wiza also had a stand-out performance on
defense recording a season-high 26 digs.
Junior Allison Schlinkert led SVSU with a match-high 16 kills.
The Huskies will host Lake Superior State Saturday (Sept. 13) at
4:00 p.m.
