MIDLAND, Mich. Michigan Tech claimed seventh place at the
2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's tennis
championship today with a 5-3 victory over Findlay. The match
wrapped up the Huskies' 2007-08 season with a 4-17 record.
Tech opened the match with a 2-1 lead after doubles. Brett Girard
and Matt Tronnes posted an 8-4 victory at number one while the
number three pairing of Justin Foley and Tim Viola cruised to an
8-2 triumph. Findlay put its first team point on the board with an
8-5 win at number two.
Foley, a senior playing in his final collegiate match, made quick
work of his number five singles opponent with a 6-3, 6-0 score.
Tronnes also won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. He finishes the year
with a team-high six singles wins.
After the Oilers gained decisions at number two and three singles,
Tech's Girard polished off the Huskies' victory. The junior number
one singles player rallied from losing the first set to post a 1-6,
7-6 (5), 7-5 triumph.
