BIG RAPIDS, Mich. Ferris State shot 63 percent in the
second half to overcome a 36-28 Michigan Tech halftime lead and
gain a 70-58 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
women's basketball victory at Wink Arena this afternoon. FSU (15-8
overall and 10-4 in the GLIAC) received 32 points from Rachel
Folcik to move within a game of the Huskies (18-5, 11-3).
The game was deadlocked through the first 10 minutes of play before
Tech's defense clamped down. The Huskies held the Bulldogs to just
two field goals in the final six minutes of action in the half to
enter the locker room leading, 36-28.
Tech scored the first bucket of the second half to push the margin
to 10 before the Bulldog comeback began. FSU scored nine straight
points and eventually tied the game at 41 with 12:26 to play. The
hosts went on to take a 51-50 lead with seven minutes to go and
pushed the margin to six with 2:22 on the clock.
Katie Wysocky made a layup on the ensuing possession to cut the gap
to four, but Ferris went on to score the next six points all
from the free throw line to ice the win.
"I'm disappointed mainly with our defense," said head coach
John Barnes. "If we make our open looks, we probably have a chance.
But you can't give up as many layups as we did and expect to beat a
good team."
Wysocky finished with 21 points and seven rebounds to lead the team
in both categories. Danae Danen was the only other Husky in double
figures as she had 10 points. Catherine Rottier added a game-high
eight assists to move to 123 on the season just seven shy of
the school record.
FSU finished the game shooting 49 percent compared to Michigan
Tech's 36 percent mark. The Huskies had trouble finding the range
from behind the arc as they were 4-of-26.
Tech, which remains atop the GLIAC North Division standings, will
play each of its final four regular season games at home. The next
contest will come Thursday (Feb. 14) vs. Saginaw Valley State.
