WHITEWATER, Wis. Michigan Tech wrapped up its opening
weekend of the 2008 spring season with a 1-2 record after falling
to Wisconsin-Whitewater by a 9-0 score today.
"It's disappointing to lose, but UW-Whitewater was a good team
playing on their home courts," said head coach Mike Axford. "The
surface here is really tough to adjust to, and I think it really
showed us what we need to work on."
UWW swept the singles matches all in straight sets. Tech freshman
Chris Verhulst posted a 7-5 score in the first set of his number
four singles match before dropping the second set 6-1. Number one
singles player Brett Girard battled but lost a 6-3, 6-4
decision.
In doubles, UW-Whitewater pulled out 8-1 victories at number one
and number three. Huskies' Alan Parenteau and Brandon Ellefson fell
by an 8-5 score at number two.
Michigan Tech will have a week off before returning to action with
a pair of matches in Indianapolis on Feb. 15-16.
