20 STRAIGHT WINNING SEASONS; 18 GLIAC TOURNEY
BERTHS
Michigan Tech has guaranteed itself a 20th consecutive winning
season and an 18th straight trip to the GLIAC Tournament in
2007-08. The string of above .500 years started with the 1988-89
season while Tech is the only team in the GLIAC to make every
league tourney since its inception in 1990-91. The Huskies own a
420-160 record (72.4 pct.) over the last 20 years, which also
encompasses 12 NCAA Tournament appearances.
WYSOCKY SETS SEASON REBOUNDING RECORD
Sophomore Katie Wysocky registered 20 rebounds in two games
last week to run her season total to 257. The total is two more
than the previous school season record of 255, which was held by
Sharon Walton from the 1983-84 season. Wysocky averages 10.3
rebounds per game good for second in the GLIAC and 19th
among all NCAA Division II players. The 6-0 forward also ranks
fourth in the GLIAC in scoring with a team-leading 16.4 points per
contest. Wysocky, who owns 410 points on the year, needs just 22
more to move onto Tech's top 10 list for points in a season.
TECH RANKED 10TH IN LATEST REGIONAL RANKINGS
Michigan Tech appears in 10th in this week's regional rankings. The
poll is used to determine the field for the NCAA Tournament, and
eight teams from each of the nation's eight regions earn berths.
The top 10 in the poll are: Drury, Hillsdale, Missouri S&T,
Ferris State, Northern Kentucky, Indianapolis, Bellarmine, Quincy,
Northwood and Michigan Tech.
ROTTIER SHATTERS SEASON ASSIST MARK
Senior Catherine Rottier has tallied eight or more
assists in four straight games to run her season total to 142. The
5-8 point guard has shattered the previous school record of 130,
which was held by Elizabeth Pietila in 2001-02. Rottier's average
of 5.9 assists per game is good to tie for second in the GLIAC. The
Seymour, Wis., native's career total is 392, which ranks third
all-time at Michigan Tech. She needs 48 more to break the school
record (439) for career assists, which is held by Dawn Zarling
(1990-95).
ACADEMICS FIRST
The Michigan Tech women's basketball team boasts a team cumulative
grade point average of 3.36. The Huskies current starting lineup
has a 3.69 cumulative grade point average. Of the 16 players on the
roster, 12 possess a GPA of 3.40 or better. Five players own a 3.80
or greater.
SEEKING 20TH WIN
Michigan Tech, which is 19-6 overall, is looking for its first
20-win season since 2004-05, when it compiled a 21-8 record. In 32
previous seasons of women's basketball, the Huskies have 11 20-win
campaigns.
SOPHOMORE TRIO
Michigan Tech's top three players in terms of scoring average are
all sophomores. Katie Wysocky averages a team-high 16.4 points
per game. Danae Danen is at 11.4 points per contest, while
Katie Zimmerman averages 9.8 points. The trio has
accounted for 52 percent of the team's points this season. In all,
Tech's sophomores and freshmen have been responsible for 73 percent
of the team's scoring.
SERIES VS. NORTHERN MICHIGAN
Tonight's meeting will be 75th between Michigan Tech and Northern
Michigan in women's basketball. The Wildcats own a 47-27 all-time
series advantage, but the Huskies have won seven straight over NMU
including a 74-61 decision at Marquette earlier this season (Dec.
8).
COACH JOHN BARNES
Michigan Tech head coach John Barnes owns a 94-43 career coaching
record and .686 winning percentage. Barnes was honored as the GLIAC
Coach of the Year in 2005-06. He is in his fifth year with the
women's program after spending the previous six year's as Tech's
men's assistant.
