HOUGHTON, Mich. Northwood earned a season split with No.
24 Michigan Tech by virtue of a 63-53 women's basketball final
today at the SDC Gym. The Timberwolves and Huskies are now tied
atop the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North
Division standings at 12-4.
The teams battled to a draw through the first half at 27-all. NU
led a majority of the time before Katie
Zimmerman converted a three-point play in the closing seconds
of the frame to tie it up.
The score remained knotted at 38 with 14 minutes to play before the
Timberwolves went on a 12-2 run. The Huskies went scoreless for
more than seven minutes during that stretch but bounced back to get
within 50-45 with three minutes to go. NU immediately answered with
a 3-pointer to push the margin back to eight, then drained 6-of-9
free throws to put the game away.
"They outplayed us today," said head coach John
Barnes. "Their defense was very good, and they were physical.
They knocked us off our game a little bit."
Northwood shot 43 percent from the field compared to 36 for the
Huskies. The visitors also held a 38-32 edge in rebounding.
Four Tech players reached double figures in points led by
Zimmerman's 14. Danae Danen tallied 12 points, while Katie
Wysocky and Catherine Rottier both scored 11. Wysocky also
turned in seven rebounds and three steals. Rottier added eight more
assists to up her school-record season total to 142.
Michigan Tech (19-6 overall) will remain at home to face arch rival
Northern Michigan on Wednesday (Feb. 20). Tipoff at the SDC Gym is
slated for 5:30 p.m.
Notes: Today was Senior Day, with Rottier, Lena
Widman and Sarah Yellen all being honored following the
contest ... Yellen got her first career start in the contest.
