HOUGHTON, Mich. Cold shooting and too many turnovers
proved costly for the Michigan Tech men's basketball team in a
57-46 loss to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe
Northwood today at the SDC Gym. The Huskies fell to 12-12 overall
and 7-9 in the league with the loss while the Timberwolves improved
to 11-14, 6-10.
Tech shot just 31 percent in the opening half but had a 25-22 lead
thanks to a 24-14 rebounding advantage. The hosts led by as many as
10 points in the frame before Northwood got back within three with
a 3-pointer at the :06 mark.
The lead changed hands several times until the 8:31 mark when the
Timberwolves went ahead for good. Tech was stuck on 37 for a
four-minute stretch, allowing NU to build a 44-37 margin. Robby
Springborn's free throws trimmed the gap to 46-41 with 2:54 to
play, but Tony Marcotullio answered immediately with a 3-pointer to
expand it back to eight points.
Northwood was able to ice the game at the foul line as the Huskies'
shots kept misfiring.
"This is a very disappointing loss," said head coach Kevin
Luke. "You can't make that many turnovers and expect to win. I
had hoped we would respond from Thursday's loss a little
better."
Tech finished with 23 turnovers and a 29 percent mark from the
floor which included a 4-of-24 showing from 3-point range.
Tim Strom was the only Husky in double figures
with 16 points on Senior Day. Fellow senior Kevin
Maloney added nine points and four rebounds.
Michigan Tech will play one of its final two regular season games
on Wednesday (Feb. 20) when arch rival Northern Michigan comes to
town. Tipoff at the SDC Gym is slated for 7:30 p.m.
Notes: Tech's four seniors Strom, Maloney, Kyle
Pullen and Josh Makela were all honored in a ceremony
before the game ... The Huskies remain alone in second place in the
GLIAC North standings after Northern Michigan (7-18, 6-10) also
lost on Saturday.
