HUSKIES RANKED NO. 24 IN WBCA/ESPN POLL
Michigan Tech is ranked No. 24 in this week's Women's Basketball
Coaches Association/ESPN Division II Top 25 Poll. The Huskies are
spending their fourth week in the national rankings. Michigan Tech
and Hillsdale (No. 20) are the only GLIAC teams represented in the
top 25. The only other team from the Great Lakes Region in the top
25 is Great Lakes Valley Conf. member Drury at No. 6.
20 STRAIGHT WINNING SEASONS; 18 GLIAC TOURNEY
BERTHS
Michigan Tech has guaranteed itself a 20th consecutive winning
season and an 18th straight trip to the GLIAC Tournament in
2007-08. The string of above .500 years started with the 1988-89
season while Tech is the only team in the GLIAC to make every
league tourney since its inception in 1990-91. The Huskies own a
419-159 record (72.5 pct.) over the last 20 years, which also
encompasses 12 NCAA Tournament appearances.
WYSOCKY TALLIES BACK-TO-BACK 20-POINT GAMES
Sophomore Katie Wysocky registered her ninth and 10th
20-point games of the season last week with 20 at Grand Valley
State and 21 at Ferris State. The 6-0 forward has notched at least
10 points in all but four of her 23 games this season to run her
point total to 374. Wysocky, who ranks fourth in the GLIAC in
scoring at 16.3 points per game, is on pace to finish the regular
season with 439 points, which would be the 10th-most in school
history.
TECH RANKED 10TH IN LATEST REGIONAL RANKINGS
Michigan Tech appears in 10th in this week's regional rankings. The
poll is used to determine the field for the NCAA Tournament, and
eight teams from each of the nation's eight regions earn berths.
The top 10 in the poll are: Drury, Hillsdale, Missouri S&T,
Indianapolis, Ferris State, Bellarmine, Quincy, Northern Kentucky,
Wisconsin-Parkside and Michigan Tech.
ROTTIER, WYSOCKY ON PACE FOR RECORDS
Senior Catherine Rottier owns 123 assists for the season
and is the first Tech player since 2001-02 (Elizabeth Pietila, 130)
to hit triple figures in assists. The 5-8 point guard is averaging
5.6 per game and is on pace to finish the regular season with a
school-record 155. Sophomore Katie
Wysocky tallied 13 rebounds last week to run her total to 237
for the season. The 6-0 forward is the first Tech player to record
200 rebounds in a season since 1993-94 when Dawn Zarling tallied
247. Wysocky is on pace to finish the regular season with a school
record 278.
ACADEMICS FIRST
The Michigan Tech women's basketball team boasts a team cumulative
grade point average of 3.36. The Huskies current starting lineup
has a 3.69 cumulative grade point average. Of the 16 players on the
roster, 12 possess a GPA of 3.40 or better. Five players own a 3.80
or greater.
SOPHOMORE TRIO
Three of Michigan Tech's top four players in terms of scoring
average are sophomores. Katie Wysocky averages a team-high 16.3
points per game. Danae Danen is at 11.1 points per contest, while
Katie Zimmerman averages 9.5 points. The trio has
accounted for 52 percent of the team's points this season. In all,
Tech's sophomores and freshmen have been responsible for 73 percent
of the team's scoring.
SERIES VS. SAGINAW VALLEY STATE, NORTHWOOD
Michigan Tech leads the series with Saginaw Valley State, 32-31,
thanks to a 77-71 victory over the Cardinals earlier this season
(Jan. 12). The Huskies are 35-14 all-time against Northwood, with
wins in nine straight and 33 of their last 34 meetings with the
Timberwolves. See page six for complete series history.
HUSKY BITES
Michigan Tech is 14-1 when leading at the half and 13-1 when
scoring 70 points or more in a game ... Tech is 18-3 in its last 21
games with a six-game winning streak and a nine-game winning streak
part of that ... Tech started the season with six straight games on
the road and eight of its first nine away from the SDC Gym. It will
finish with four straight home games.
COACH JOHN BARNES
Michigan Tech head coach John Barnes owns a 93-42 career coaching
record and .674 winning percentage. Barnes was honored as the GLIAC
Coach of the Year in 2005-06. He is in his fifth year with the
women's program after spending the previous six year's as Tech's
men's assistant.
