MIDLAND, Mich. The Michigan Tech men's basketball team
played a strong game on both ends of the floor to defeat Northwood
65-47 today at the Bennett Sports Center. The Huskies (4-3 overall
and 1-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference)
committed just eight turnovers and made 16-of-19 free throws to
gain the victory.
"I thought we did a great job on defense to hold them to 47 points
in their own building," said head coach Kevin Luke. "Even though we
didn't shoot a great percentage from the field, we did a nice job
controlling the clock and executing our offense."
Tech held a 27-21 advantage at halftime despite foul trouble from
Brian Olley (3), Chris Baugh (2) and Fedrick Bowe (2). Robby
Springborn tallied 11 first half points on 5-of-6 shooting from the
field.
The Timberwolves out-attempted the Huskies 11-to-0 at the foul line
in the first half, but that changed in half number two. Tech made
19 trips to the line and cashed in on 16 for 84 percent. Meanwhile,
NU was 16-of-27 (59 percent) at the charity stripe for the
game.
Michigan Tech pushed the margin from 39-36 to 52-38 during a three
and a half minute stretch of the second half. Matt Gaedke's
3-pointer with 3:49 left came against NU's one-three-one zone and
pushed the gap to 15.
Bowe slammed a dunk with 2:03 to play to put the game on ice.
Tech shot 42 percent from the field compared to 39 percent for the
hosts. The Timberwolves held a 33-27 rebounding advantage but
committed 18 turnovers 10 more than the Huskies' eight.
Springborn finished with a game-high 18 points. Gaedke also reached
double figures for the first time in his career with 10. Seven
other Huskies scored and none fouled out even though four of them
had four fouls at the end of the contest.
Michigan Tech will return home for a GLIAC contest against arch
rival Northern Michigan next Saturday (Dec. 13). The game will tip
off at 7:30 at the SDC Gym.
