DETROIT The 19th-ranked Michigan Tech women's basketball
team opened its 2008-09 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference schedule with a 62-55 win at Wayne State tonight.
Juniors Danae Danen and Katie
Wysocky combined for 34 points and 21 rebounds to help the
Huskies advance to 3-1 overall.
Tech struggled somewhat shooting the basketball after its 12-day
layoff, but outscored the Warriors (1-3) by 14 at the free throw
line.
The margin was 26-22 at the break after WSU closed the half on a
7-2 spurt. The hosts were within a bucket just a minute into the
second half before back-to-back 3-pointers by Sarah
Stream and Wysocky. The lead grew to 40-30 on Katie
Zimmerman's 3-pointer at the 14:20 mark.
After a six-point Warrior run, Tech had the answer again. This time
it was Danen draining a triple. She followed up with another basket
for a nine-point lead. Using a full-court press, Wayne pulled
within 54-49 with a minute to play but the Huskies iced the win at
the foul line.
"I certainly don't think we played our best game, but it's nice to
come away with the win," said sixth-year head coach John
Barnes. "We defended their leading players pretty well, and
Danae and Katie made some big shots for us."
Tech shot just 37 percent from the field and 61 percent (14-of-23)
at the free throw line. The Warriors were 42 percent from the floor
and 0-of-4 at the charity stripe.
Danen posted a game-high 18 points to go with eight rebounds.
Wysocky added 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Zimmerman (12)
and Stream (11) also reached double figures in points.
WSU was led by Brook Bowers' 15 points.
Michigan Tech will continue its road trip at Northwood on Saturday
(Dec. 6). Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.
