HOUGHTON, Mich. The No. 14-ranked Michigan Tech women's
basketball team returned from an eight-day layoff tonight and was
defeated 63-58 by a tough Minnesota Duluth squad. The Huskies
committed an uncharacteristic 19 turnovers as they had their six
game winning streak snapped.
Despite UMD hitting 11 of its first 19 field goals, the Huskies
went into the halftime lockerroom up 33-27. Alicia
Schneider tallied eight first-half points including a deep
3-pointer right before the buzzer.
The second half saw the Bulldogs use a 20-10 run to grab a 50-48
advantage with six minutes to play. Tech tied the game at 50 with
two free throws from Katie Zimmerman, but the Bulldogs scored
the next five points.
Danae Danen drained a 3-pointer part of a
game-high 20 points with 1:50 to play to close the gap to
57-55. UMD, which seemingly hit every big shot it needed all night,
got a layup on the next trip down the floor after Tech blocked the
initial shot.
The margin was back up to five points after free throws from the
Bulldogs' Kelsey Hewitt with 52 seconds to play. Katie
Wysocky then made a layup and Sarah
Stream got a steal in the backcourt with under 30 to play.
Tara Ferris misfired on a 3-point attempt to tie
the game with 16 seconds left. After a Schneider offensive rebound,
Stream forced a long-range try with four seconds remaining. It
missed and UMD sealed the win at the foul line.
"We made too many mental mistakes on defense and turned the ball
over too many times on offense to beat a good team like Duluth,"
said head coach John Barnes. "We came in leading the nation in
fewest turnovers per game. If we take care of the ball a few more
times, the outcome could've been much different."
UMD (5-5) finished at 48 percent shooting from the floor including
a 3-of-5 effort from behind the arc in the second half as the
Huskies were attempting to make a comeback. The visitors also used
a 35-26 rebounding margin and 12-0 edge in second-chance
points.
Tech shot 40 percent from the field including an 8-of-21 effort (38
percent) from 3-point range.
Danen had a career-high four 3-pointers as part of her season-high
20 points. Wysocky added 11 points and a game-high nine
rebounds.
Zimmerman tallied 10 points.
Michigan Tech's five-game home stand is now over. The Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leaders will head to Northern
Michigan for a league tilt Saturday (Jan. 3). Tipoff at the Berry
Events Center is slated for 1 p.m.
