HOUGHTON, Mich. - The No. 14 Michigan Tech Huskies held Northern
Michigan to 24.6 percent shooting en route to a 74-43 women's
basketball victory at the SDC Gym tonight. The win was the ninth
straight for Tech over their arch rivals from Marquette, and
Huskies' third straight victory in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference. The hosts improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in
the GLIAC.
"Coach Mattson and his team really came out ready to play tonight,"
said head coach John Barnes. "Once we settled down, we were able
to find some open shots. We tried to take advantage of the
mismatches inside, and it paid off."
Katie Zimmerman scored the first six Tech points
with a pair of 3-pointers from the left wing. The junior guard
would an additional pair of triples throughout the game for a 12
point performance and a 4-4 night from beyond the arc.
Michigan Tech held a 17-12 advantage at the 5:02 mark when junior
guard Sarah Stream scored the next six for the Black
and Gold. Stream's run was part of a 16-3 run that spanned the
final six and a half minutes of the first half. Stream finished
with eight points, two assists, and two steals.
"It's great to have Stream back after her missing last year with
injury," Barnes said."Once she made that initial layup, we started
to run isolation plays with her. She did a great job changing
things up, taking a 15-foot jumper then driving strong to the
rim."
During the second half, the hosts utilized a 21-3 run that spanned
five minutes to take a 57-29 lead. Four Tech players recorded
points over that span.
Junior forward Katie Wysocky led the way for Tech, garnering a
double-double which consisted of 19 points and 11 rebounds. The
Whitefish Bay, Wis. native also tallied a trio of assists and a
steal in the contest.
Fellow junior Danae Danen was another large part of the attack,
recording 13 points and matching her career high in rebounds with
11. The 6-0 Green Bay, Wis. native also had a pair of blocks and
four assists on the evening.
The Michigan Tech defense held Northern Michigan's prolific scorer,
Kelsey Deacon, to a season low three points. The 5-7 senior guard
came into the SDC Gym averaging 16.7 points per game. The Huskies
set the tone on the defensive end of the floor with a 6-0 advantage
in blocks.
The Wildcats were paced by Kellie Rietveld who scored 13 points in
the loss, which dropped NMU to 4-3 and 0-3 in the GLIAC.
The Huskies return to GLIAC action on Thursday (Dec. 18) to play
host the Northwood Timberwolves. The tip-off is slated for 5:30
p.m.
