HOUGHTON, Mich. The 14th-ranked Michigan Tech women's
basketball team cruised to a 91-30 win over Finlandia in its home
opener tonight. All 12 available Huskies scored and the hosts
limited the Lions to 28.6 field goal percentage in the contest.
"We came out and played with intensity the entire game," said head
coach John Barnes. "Our bench players came in and kept it going in
the right direction for us.
"It was a good all-around win, but we'll quickly turn our focus on
Northern Michigan and Saturday's game."
Finlandia (0-9) scored the first four points of the game before
Tech answered with a 22-3 run. Lindsey Lindstrom drained three
3-pointers in the final nine minutes of the half as the Huskies'
lead grew to 45-15 by halftime.
The Black and Gold continued where they left off in the first half
as Sarah Stream drained a 30-foot 3-pointer to beat the shot clock
just 45 seconds into the second stanza. The margin continued to
grow through the final horn as the largest lead for Tech was the
final score.
Lindstrom held game-high scoring honors with 13 points. She started
the contest a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point range. Fellow freshmen
Lynn Giesler and Jessica Racine both set career highs in points
with 12 and seven, respectively. Katie Wysocky also reached double
figures in points with 12.
Tech shot 52 percent from the field and an impressive 10-of-18
(55.6 percent) from 3-point range. The Huskies committed just seven
turnovers compared to FU's 29.
Michigan Tech improved its record to 5-1 with the win. The Huskies
will remain at home to host arch rival Northern Michigan Saturday
(Dec. 13). Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
