HOUGHTON, Mich. - No. 11 Minnesota State scored a pair of power
play goals to skate away with a 4-2 win over the Michigan Tech
hockey team in WCHA action Saturday (Nov. 22). The Mavericks
(7-3-2, 5-3-2) finished 2-3 on the power play and Tech (2-9-1,
1-8-1) was 0-3.
"We made some mistakes, and they capitalized," said head coach
Jamie Russell. "We had a few two-on-one chances and couldn't
convert."
MSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead by the first intermission thanks to
goals by junior forward Trevor Bruess and sophomore Rylan
Galiardi.
Bruess' goal came at 3:44 off assists by junior forward Geoff Irwin
and sophomore defenseman Ben Youds.
Sophomore defenseman Kurt Davis connected with Galiardi on a long
pass from his own defensive end for the Mavericks' second goal.
Senior goalie Mike Zacharias also assisted on the power play goal
at 15:19.
Sophomore forward Jordan Baker scored his team-leading sixth goal
of the season at 7:40 of the second period. Freshman forward Brett
Olson recorded his third point of the weekend with an assist on the
goal. Fellow freshman forward Alex MacLeod also assisted on the
goal.
After a goal by MSU junior defenseman Nick Canzanello, senior
forward Alex Gagne pulled the Huskies back within a goal when his
shot deflected off two Maverick defensemen and into the net. It was
his third goal of the season. Junior defender Drew Dobson recorded
his team-best ninth assist of the season and senior defenseman
Geoff Kinrade tallied his third.
Mankato put the game away when junior forward Trevor Bruess scored
his second goal of the night on the power play at 11:48 of the
third period. Youds and Davis each picked up their second assists
of the evening on the goal.
Zacharias (7-3-2), who has played every game for the Mavericks this
season, made 26 saves and gave up both goals.
Freshman Josh Robinson (1-2-0), who made his first regular season
start at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena, made 21 saves on 25
shots.
Tech will play a non-conference series next weekend (Nov. 28-29) at
Bemidji State.
