UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. Michigan Tech had one match
point before host Saginaw Valley State came away with a 3-2 victory
in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball
tonight. The Cardinals (18-5, 8-4 GLIAC) won all the odd-numbered
sets, 25-21, 18-25, 25-18, 14-25, 16-14 to snap the Huskies' (15-8,
9-3) seven-match league winning streak.
The winning team in each set was able to get off to a quick start,
and that was true in the fifth as well. SVSU jumped out to a 10-5
advantage before the Huskies came storming back. Tech got the side
out before Lindsay Dixon served six straight times for a
seven-point run and a 12-10 advantage.
After a Cardinal service error, Tech had match point. The hosts
fended off the 14-13 deficit with a clean kill, then won the next
two points with a block and a kill to split the season series.
"If we'd played all match with the discipline and urgency that we
showed in the fifth set, we could have won in three," said head
coach Krista Mikesch. "Give Saginaw credit. They did some things to
get us out of our game, but we just needed to execute better."
Veronica Armstrong posted a match-high 16 kills to go with 10 digs.
Jen Jung added 13 kills and a .500 hitting percentage.
Tech outscored the Cardinals 103-98 in total points in the match
and held advantages in hitting percentage (.260-.199), digs (81-72)
and team blocks (7.0-6.5).
Michigan Tech will remain on the road for a 2 p.m. match at Lake
Superior State tomorrow.
