HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Michigan Tech volleyball team extended
their Great Lakes Intercolligiate Athletic Conference winning
streak to six matches in a 3-2 triumph over the Wayne State
Warriors on Friday (Oct. 10). In a defensive showcase, the Huskies
(13-5, 8-2) outblocked the Warriors 14-10 in the match that
featured the top two blocking squads in the conference.
The Huskies bested Wayne State in the first two sets (25-19,
25-21), then dropped the following pair (17-25, 22-25) before a set
five victory (15-7).
"The first two sets were the best sets we've played this
year," said 10th year head coach Krista
Mikesch. "We just need to close out games when teams give us
opportunities like we had tonight."
Seven different Michigan Tech players finished with kills in
the five set marathon. Senior Veronica
Armstrong led the team with 17 kills, and added 17 digs to give
her a double-double on the evening. Seniors Jen and Christa
Jung recorded 12 kills apiece, while Junior Kelly
Jorgensen tallied nine on the night.
"The more balanced we are, the more it's going to help us down
the road. We have a bunch of different players getting kills, and
that way a team can't just key off of one or two of our players,"
said Mikesch.
Freshman
Kristine Sexton was another contributor in the
Huskies multi-pronged attack, garnering nine kills of her own to go
along with a pair of assists.
The Warriors were led by junior Sarha Gosselin who finished
the match with 17 kills, 12 digs, and six assists.
Michigan Tech will look to extend it's winning streak to seven
when it faces Northwood, another GLIAC South Division opponent,
Saturday (Oct. 11) at 4:00 p.m.
