MARQUETTE, Mich. - Northern Michigan scored three first period
goals and went on to defeat Michigan Tech 5-2 in front of a crowd
of over 4,000 spectators Friday (Oct. 10) at the Superior Showcase.
The Huskies (0-1-0) out shot the Wildcats (1-0-0) 30-11 in the
contest.
"We have a veteran defensive core but they did not play like a
veteran defensive core tonight," said head coach Jamie
Russell. "You really can't fault our goaltender tonight."
Freshman Andrew Cherniwchan factored into all three of the Wildcats
first period goals. He scored the first and third goals and
assisted on the second.
Northern capitalized on its lone power play of the night to extend
its lead to 4-0 six minutes into the middle frame. NMU added an
unassisted even-strength goal at 12:22 as well to push its lead to
5-0.
Sophomore Jordan Baker broke up the Wildcat shut out after
he redirected a shot by junior Drew
Dobson at 16:01 of the second period. Senior Malcolm
Gwilliam also assisted on the goal.
Freshman Alex MacLeod recorded his first career goal on
the power play at 18:35 of the third period. He was assisted by
Baker and junior John Kivisto.
The Huskies finished 1-5 on the power play and the Wildcats were
1-1.
Senior Rob Nolan (0-1-0) made four saves and gave up all
five goals. Freshman Josh Robinson made two saves in 28 minutes
of work.
Junior Brian Stewart (1-0-0) made 28 saves on 30 shots for the
Wildcats.
Tech will face Lake Superior State Saturday (Oct. 11) in the
Superior Showcase. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
