Box Score
HOUGHTON, Mich. The No. 19 Michigan Tech women's
basketball team re-claimed the top spot in the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division by defeating
Ferris State today. The Huskies needed overtime, but didn't allow
the Bulldogs a field goal for the final three minutes of the extra
session to gain a 75-74 victory.
Tech managed to tie the score at the end of regulation by holding
Ferris State scoreless for the final 2:50. Katie
Wysocky's layup off a nice feed from Catherine
Rottier knotted the game at 69 with 1:47 to go in the second
half. Both teams had numerous chances in the final minute, but
neither scored, sending the game to overtime Tech's first OT
of the year.
In the extra time, Danae Danen scored four points including
the eventual game-winning points at the 1:47 mark that put Tech on
top, 75-72. Teghan Thelen knocked down two free throws for the
visitors with 1:36 to go, but those would be the last points for
either team. Lena Widman got a steal with 51 seconds left.
Then after a Tech turnover, FSU's Caitlin Hutchison missed a layup
as time expired.
"We kept battling and found a way to win," said head coach John
Barnes. "We relied on our defense in cruch time, and we got the
stop when we needed it."
Ferris State built an early double digit margin and led by as many
as 12 with 5:08 to play in the first half. Lena
Widman and Tara Ferris then combined for 11 points during a
15-2 Tech run to put the hosts on top. FSU eventually took a 40-38
lead into halftime.
Tech had six different players reach double figures in points for
the game. Wysocky had 15 points and 18 rebounds for game highs in
both categories. Widman added 13 points and eight rebounds. Danen
(12 points), Ferris (12), Katie
Zimmerman (11) and Rottier (10) gave the Huskies their most
balanced scoring attack all season.
FSU shot 46 percent from the field compared to 39 percent for the
Huskies. Tech forced 18 Bulldogs' turnovers and held Rachel Folcik,
who entered the game as the league's leading score at nearly 21
points per game, to 11 points.
Michigan Tech (16-4 overall and 9-2 in the GLIAC) will have a week
off before traveling to face Lake Superior State on Saturday (Feb.
2).
Notes: Ferris tied her career high with the 12 points ...
Wysocky's 18-rebound effort was just two shy of Tech's single-game
record of 20, shared by Darla Innes and Sharon Walton ... Tech's
last overtime game came Dec. 28, 2004 vs. Wisconsin-Parkside. The
Huskies won that home game, 67-66.
