WYSOCKY NAMED GLIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Katie Wysocky earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference North Division Player of the Week accolades for the week
ending Jan. 13. The Huskies' sophomore averaged 21.0 points, 11.5
rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals in helping the Huskies to a
2-0 record last week. In a 65-59 win at Northwood last Thursday
(Jan. 10), Wysocky notched 20 points and 15 rebounds for her
seventh double-double of the season. She then backed it up with 22
points, eight rebounds and four assists in a 77-71 win at Saginaw
Valley State (Jan. 12). Wysocky was 15-of-24 from the field and
10-of-11 from the free throw line during the week. The 6-0 forward
ranks in the top five of the GLIAC in five different categories:
scoring (4th at 16.4 points per game), rebounding (3rd at 10.0 per
game), field goal percentage (4th at 56.6), free throw percentage
(2nd at 88.7) and 3-point percentage (1st at 50.0).
ROTTIER INCHES TOWARDS 1,000 CAREER POINTS
Senior Catherine Rottier scored seven points in each of Tech's two
wins last week to move within nine points of 1,000 for her career.
The 5-8 guard has scored 161 of her 991 career points this season
for a 10.7 average. She is looking to become the 16th player in
school history to score 1,000 points. In addition to her scoring
exploits, Rottier ranks third in the GLIAC in assists per game at
5.7. The highest assist average for a season in Michigan Tech
history is 4.6 per game.
SOPHOMORE TRIO
Three of Michigan Tech's top four players in terms of scoring
average are sophomores. Katie Wysocky averages a team-high 16.4
points per game. Danae Danen is at 10.6 points per contest, while
Katie Zimmerman averages 9.0 points. The trio has accounted for 50
percent of the team's points this season.
ZIMM COMES THROUGH AT SVSU
Katie Zimmerman missed her career high by just a point at Saginaw
Valley State last Saturday (Jan. 12) as she tallied 19 points. The
5-6 guard knocked down 4-of-7 3-pointers and all five of her free
throws to lift the Huskies to the win. She finished the week with
27 points in two games including a 9-of-9 mark at the foul line.
Zimmerman ranks third in the GLIAC in 3-pointers made and leads the
team in free throw percentage (94.4).
HUSKIES BITES
At 13-3, Michigan Tech is off to its best start since 2004-05
(16-3) ... Tech is 10-0 when leading at the half, 11-1 when scoring
70 or more points and 11-1 when holding its opponent under 70
points ... The Huskies have 11 games left on their 2007-08 schedule
all GLIAC contests. Of those 11, eight are at home and three
on the road.
SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM
Michigan Tech owns a 414-157 record (72.5 pct.) since the start of
the 1998-99 season. That stretch encompasses 19 consecutive winning
seasons, 12 NCAA Tournament appearances and a league-record 17
consecutive GLIAC Tournament appearances.
SERIES VS. WAYNE STATE, HILLSDALE
Michigan Tech owns a 29-13 record vs. Wayne State since the series
began in 1980. The Warriors eked out a 62-61 win in Detroit a year
ago (Jan. 18, 2007), but the Huskies have won 11 of the last 14
matchups. Against Hillsdale, Tech is 32-14 all-time. The Chargers
69-65 victory in Hillsdale a year ago (Jan. 20) snapped a Huskies'
four-game winning streak over HC.
COACH JOHN BARNES
Michigan Tech head coach John Barnes owns a 88-40 career coaching
record and .688 winning percentage. Barnes was honored as the GLIAC
Coach of the Year in 2005-06. He is in his fifth year with the
women's program after spending the previous six year's as Tech's
men's assistant.
