UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. Michigan Tech won its seventh
straight women's basketball game by defeating Saginaw Valley State,
77-71, today at O'Neill Arena. The Huskies led by as many as 16
points but needed to make free throws at the end of the game to
improve to 13-3 on the year.
Tech built up a 47-34 halftime advantage thanks to 67 percent field
goal shooting. Katie Wysocky dropped in 16 points in the opening
half and Alicia Schneider added nine more on three 3-pointers.
The lead ballooned to as many as 16 in the second half before the
Cardinals made a 9-0 run. The hosts continued to slice away at the
margin to get within 70-66 with :51 to go. Timely 3-pointers by
Katie Zimmerman kept Michigan Tech on top down the stretch.
Fouling attempts by SVSU in the final minute yielded no returns as
the Huskies sank seven consecutive free throws to ice the win.
"We probably didn't play our best game today," said head coach John
Barnes. "But it's always nice to get a win on the road. We overcame
our turnovers with clutch free throw shooting."
Wysocky finished with 22 points, eight rebound and four assists.
Zimmerman added 19 points with four 3-pointers three in the
second half. Schneider and Danae Danen tallied nine points
apiece.
Tech committed 18 turnovers, but atoned for that with 53 percent
field goal shooting and a 33-22 rebounding advantage. The Huskies
also swished 18-of-20 foul shots in the contest.
Michigan Tech will return home to play Wayne State on Thursday
(Jan. 17). Tipoff at the SDC Gym is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
