MIDLAND, Mich. A 17-6 run to end the game propelled the
Michigan Tech women's basketball team to a hard-fought, 65-59
victory tonight over Northwood at the Bennett Sports Center. Katie
Wysocky tallied 20 points and 15 rebounds and several other
Huskies turned in clutch performances to push the visitors to 12-3
overall and 5-1 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
play. The Timberwolves fell to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the league
standings with the loss.
Trailing 53-48 with 4:15 to play, Danae
Danen kick started the 17-6 run with a three-point play. Katie
Zimmerman then drove to the hoop on back-to-back possessions
and connected with tough layups both times to give the Huskies a
55-53 lead. The offensive team scored on the next three trips down
the floor to leave the score tied at 57.
With under a minute to play and the shot clock running down, senior
Catherine Rottier swished an off-balanced,
left-handed runner through the paint to put Tech on top for good.
Danen then stuffed a Northwood layup attempt and cleared the
rebound. Zimmerman drained two free throws with 26 seconds left for
a four-point lead.
Four straight free throws from Angela
Guisfredi iced the Huskies win.
"I'm glad to get out of here with a win," said head coach John
Barnes. "I felt like we made the plays at the end of the game
to get the job done. Northwood forces a lot of turnovers, and we
kept our turnovers down tonight."
The teams played to a dead heat in the first half. Rebounds, field
goal percentage and turnovers were virtually identical in the
opening 20 minutes as was the score at 30-all.
For the game, Tech was 44 percent from the field compared to 37
percent for the Timberwolves. The Huskies committed just 13
turnovers and went 13-of-13 for the game at the foul line.
Wysocky was 9-of-12 from the field en route to her sixth 20-point
game of the season. Danen finished with 15 points to go with five
rebounds and two blocks. Three others had seven points or more
including Alicia Schneider who returned from missing the
previous five game to tally seven points.
Michigan Tech will continue its road trip at Saginaw Valley State
on Saturday (Jan. 12). Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. at O'Neill
Arena.
