MIDLAND, Mich. It took overtime, but the Michigan Tech
men's basketball team pulled out a 74-64 victory at Northwood
tonight. Robby Springborn tallied a career-high 31 points
including seven in the extra session to help the Huskies even their
record at 7-7.
Tech was seemingly on its way to the win in regulation as it led by
four points with 15 seconds to play. Springborn hit two free throws
to make it 55-51. NU's Aaron Simpson then drained a 3-pointer with
6.6 seconds left to cut the gap to one. A quick foul left 6.0 on
the clock, and Kevin Maloney scored his first two points of the

sent the game to overtime with a deep 3-pointer.
In the extra session, Northwood got the tip and made a basket for a
59-57 lead. It was all Michigan Tech from there. Josh
Makela converted a three-point play then made two more free
throws for a 62-59 edge. Maloney and Fedrick
Bowe combined for three more makes at the line to put the
Huskies up 65-59.
Springborn scored seven of the team's last nine points in overtime
to push the final margin to 74-64.
"I'm proud of our kids because we battled tonight and got a big win
on the road," said head coach Kevin
Luke. "The guys stepped up without Tim (Strom) in the lineup,
and I thought free throws were huge down the stretch."
Strom, Tech's leading scorer and rebounder on the season, did not
play due to injury. Three other Huskies shouldered the scoring load
with 10 or more points. Springborn's 31 came off 9-of-19 field goal
shooting and 11-of-13 free throw shooting. It was the highest point
total by a Tech player since Radayl Richardson notched 31 vs. Lake
Superior State a year ago (Feb. 10, 2007).
Bowe finished with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for his
third double-double of the season. Kris
Alpers added 10 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocked
shots.
Michigan Tech built a 27-18 advantage at the half, but saw
Northwood score 39 second half points mainly with a 7-of-15
mark from 3-point range. The Huskies led for 19:59 of the second
half before Harrison's 3-pointer found the bottom of the net.
The visitors held a 47-41 rebounding edge thanks to the 14 from
Bowe and 10 more from Sean Geary. The 5-10 point guard added six
points, four assists, four steals and zero turnovers in 39 minutes
of action.
Tech committed just eight turnovers for the game compared to 12 for
the Timberwolves.
The stat of the game was free throws. Michigan Tech went 30-of-41
(73 percent) compared to Northwood's 7-of-14 (50 percent).
