MEN'S TENNIS DROPS PAIR AT GLIAC TOURNAMENT

Huskies to Face Lake Superior State in Tomorrow's Seventh-Place Match

MIDLAND, Mich. -- Michigan Tech completed day one of the 2007 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament today at the Midland Tennis Center. The sixth-seeded Huskies lost their opening match to third-seeded Mercyhurst, 6-0, before being edged by seventh-seeded Findlay, 5-4.

The match against Mercyhurst was stopped after the outcome was decided. The Lakers swept the doubles points and three of the six singles matches before play was stopped. The matches of Tech's Brett Girard, Alan Parenteau, and Matt Tronnes were all unfinished.

In the Findlay match, the Huskies jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles with Girard and Chris Calder combining for an 8-5 win at number one, and Rick Halverson and Andy Sims teaming up for a 9-7 win at number two.

Girard won his number one singles match, 6-3, 6-2, over UF's Travis Whipple. Halverson was also victorious. He used three sets for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 triumph at number two.

Brandon Ellefson dropped the first set of his number three singles match, 7-5, but fought back to force a third set with a 6-0 win in the second. Unfortunately, Ellefson was defeated 6-3 in the decisive set.

Michigan Tech (7-17) will wrap up its 2007 season with the GLIAC Tournament seventh-place game tomorrow at 9 a.m. vs. Lake Superior State.
