Huskies to Face Lake Superior State in Tomorrow's Seventh-Place
Match
MIDLAND, Mich. -- Michigan Tech completed day one of the 2007
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Tennis
Tournament today at the Midland Tennis Center. The sixth-seeded
Huskies lost their opening match to third-seeded Mercyhurst, 6-0,
before being edged by seventh-seeded Findlay, 5-4.
The match against Mercyhurst was stopped after the outcome was
decided. The Lakers swept the doubles points and three of the six
singles matches before play was stopped. The matches of Tech's
Brett Girard, Alan Parenteau, and Matt Tronnes were all
unfinished.
In the Findlay match, the Huskies jumped out to a 2-1 lead after
doubles with Girard and Chris Calder combining for an 8-5 win at
number one, and Rick Halverson and Andy Sims teaming up for a 9-7
win at number two.
Girard won his number one singles match, 6-3, 6-2, over UF's Travis
Whipple. Halverson was also victorious. He used three sets for a
6-3, 4-6, 6-2 triumph at number two.
Brandon Ellefson dropped the first set of his number three singles
match, 7-5, but fought back to force a third set with a 6-0 win in
the second. Unfortunately, Ellefson was defeated 6-3 in the
decisive set.
Michigan Tech (7-17) will wrap up its 2007 season with the GLIAC
Tournament seventh-place game tomorrow at 9 a.m. vs. Lake Superior
State.
