Huskies Split Two Road Matches
FINDLAY, Ohio -- Michigan Tech secured a 5-4 win at Findlay
today thanks to a three-set victory at number two singles from
senior Rick Halverson. The Huskies split their two Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches on the road trip to
move to 6-12 overall and 1-2 in league play on the season.
Tech led by a 2-1 team score after doubles. Chris Calder and Brett
Girard combined for an 8-4 victory at number one doubles. Alan
Parenteau and Brandon Ellefson then scored an 8-6 triumph at number
three doubles.
Findlay's Steven Fox evened the match score at 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-3
win at number four singles. Ellefson and Girard then put the
Huskies up, 4-2, by surrendering just six games each in straight
set victories at number three and one singles, respectively.
The Oilers claimed a win at number five singles before Halverson's
6-7, 6-4, 6-4 triumph put the match away.
"Yesterday's match gave us experience that helped us today," said
head coach Mike Axford. "We played each point better and were able
to string those together for good results."
Tech lost, 9-0, in its opening match of the weekend at Mercyhurst.
Calder had the closest match of the day with a third-set super
tiebreaker loss at number five singles, 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5).
Michigan Tech will return home for two straight matches beginning
Saturday (Mar. 31) vs. Wayne State.
