LADIES ROLL PAST UMD, 81-56, IN HOME HOOPS OPENER

Box Score

HOUGHTON, Mich. — After six road games and 11 days of travel in the last three weeks to open its 2007-08 season, the Michigan Tech women's basketball team finally played a home game. The Huskies took full advantage, defeating Minnesota Duluth, 81-56 — their most lopsided win over the Bulldogs since 1992.

"It was good to see the balance tonight," said Tech head coach John Barnes in regards to his team having 10 different players score. "We knocked down open shots on offense and made them take some tough shots with our defense."

Michigan Tech exceeded the 60-percent mark in field goal shooting for both halves to finish the game at 62 percent. The Huskies also knocked in 58 percent on 10-of-17 accuracy from 3-point range. Duluth was just 30 percent from the field and 35 percent from long range.

UMD made the opening basket of the game before Alicia Schneider set the tone for the hosts' offense. She hit two three-pointers as the Huskies scored 13 unanswered points to seize control of the game. Tech built the lead to as many as 21 in the half before settling for a 41-27 advantage at the break.

The margin was never closer than 15 points the entire second half as the Huskies' bench played a majority of the minutes.

Starter Katie Wysocky tallied game highs of 15 points and nine rebounds for Tech. Reserves Lisa Staehlin (11 points) and Lucy Dernovsek (10 points) both reached double figures in scoring as well. Starting point guard Catherine Rottier scored just seven points but finished with five assists and two steals in 20 minutes of action.

The win was Tech's fifth straight dating back to a 79-69 win at Minnesota Duluth on Nov. 23.

The Huskies will take their 5-2 overall record to U.P. and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Northern Michigan Saturday (Dec. 8) for a 1 p.m. tipoff.

Notes: Dernovsek and Angela Guisfredi, who scored eight points, both turned in career highs in scoring ... Tech held a 37-30 rebounding advantage in the game — their third straight with a rebounding edge ... The Huskies improved to 5-0 when scoring at least 70 points.
