DULUTH, Minn. Michigan Tech evened its 2007-08 record at
2-2 with a 73-70 victory over St. Cloud State tonight at The Edge
Thanksgiving Classic today. Katie Zimmerman drove the left baseline
and broke a 66-all tie with a layup at the 1:23 mark then added the
game-winning points at the free throw line with 18 seconds to go to
lift Tech to a 2-0 weekend.
The game was a close affair throughout with neither team leading by
more than six points. Michigan Tech held a 38-35 halftime advantage
and led most of the second half but could never pull away. SCSU
took their last lead of the game, 52-51, at the 9:14 mark. Tech
answered immediately as Alicia Schneider made a nifty pass to Danae
Danen for an uncontested layup just 15 seconds later.
St. Cloud State was able to tie the game at the 1:40 mark before
Zimmerman responded quickly with the dribble drive and hoop. After
a defensive stop, Katie Wysocky made it a four-point game with a
layup on a designed play on another assist from Schneider.
SCSU was able to get within three points with a layup and two free
throws in the final 11 seconds sandwiched around a Catherine
Rottier free throw her only point of the game.
"It really seemed like we we able to make the right plays tonight
when we needed them," said head coach John Barnes. "We made some
big 3-pointers in the final five minutes. If we would have made a
couple more free throws, it wouldn't have been as difficult to get
the win."
Tech made 46.6 percent of its field goals including a 6-of-14 mark
from behind the arc, but it struggled at the foul line by making
just 13-of-23 attempts. The Huskies misfired on the front end of
four one-and-one opportunities.
Schneider tallied a team-high 13 points to lead four players in
double figures. She also added five assists and three rebounds in
33 minutes of action. Wysocky tallied her second straight
double-double with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Zimmerman
(11 points) and Widman (10) also reached double digits.
St. Cloud State posted a 44-38 rebounding advantage but was just
39.1 percent from the field.
Michigan Tech (2-2) will remain on the road for two more games next
week. The Huskies travel to Erie, Pa., for games against Mercyhurst
Thursday (Nov. 29) and Gannon Saturday (Dec. 1).
Notes: Wysocky and Rottier were both named to the Edge Thanksgiving
Classic All-Tournament Team ... Senior Sarah Yellen tallied five
points, two rebounds and a blocked shot in 11 minutes and provided
a spark while Danen, Widman, and Lisa Staehlin were all on the
bench with two fouls in the first half ... Wysocky is now averaging
12.4 points and 11.8 rebounds per game.
