DULUTH, Minn. Catherine Rottier poured in a career-high
28 points and Katie Wysocky added 17 points and 14 rebounds to give
the Huskies their first win of the season a 79-69 decision
at Minnesota Duluth in tonight's Edge Classic matchup. The victory
was Michigan Tech's second in a row vs. Minnesota Duluth and first
at Romano Gymnasium since 1998.
Tech (1-2) used a 18-7 run to end the first half, then grabbed the
lead for good at the 18:44 mark of the second half during the
opening day of action at The Edge Classic.
Rottier scored 21 of her 28 points in the second half including
five straight early in the frame to give the Huskies a 45-38
advantage. UMD was able to get within 56-50 at the 10:49 mark, but
10 more consecutive points from Rottier pushed the margin to 14 by
the 7:19 mark. The Bulldogs got within seven points in the final
minute, but the Huskies hit three more free throws for the final
differential of 10.
"I felt like we finally put it all together tonight," said head
coach John Barnes. "I was very happy to see Catherine and Katie
step up and take control. We scored points in the post and defended
well against a big, physical team. We need to build on this for
tomorrow's game."
Michigan Tech's 40-29 advantage on the boards was bolstered by
Wysocky's 14 eight of which were on the offensive glass.
Senior Lena Widman pulled down eight rebounds including five
offensive.
Of Rottier's 28 points, 11 came at the free throw line on 12
attempts. The senior also had six rebounds, six assists, two steals
and just one turnover.
Freshman Lisa Staehlin notched her first double-digit outing as a
collegian with 10 points.
Michigan Tech will return to action tomorrow (Nov. 24) at The Edge
Classic with a 1 p.m. (CT) tipoff against St. Cloud State.
