ST. CLOUD TOPS TECH, 4-1, IN BATTLE OF HUSKIES

HOUGHTON, Mich. — #13 Michigan Tech limited #17 St. Cloud State to 16 shots on goal, but the visiting Huskies completed the Western Collegiate Hockey Association sweep at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena tonight with a 4-1 victory. SCSU took a 3-1 lead in the second period and added an empty net goal in the third to advance its record to 6-2-2 overall (3-2-1 WCHA). Michigan Tech fell to 5-5-0 (4-4-0 WCHA).

"We played hard and competed tonight," said Tech head coach Jamie Russell. "But we made some critical errors, and if you do that in our league it will cost you."

For the second straight night, St. Cloud was the first team on the board. Midway through the first period, Matt Stephenson threw a shot on net from atop the right circle that hit the inside of the goalpost and bounced in. Then with 12 seconds left in the frame, Garrett Roe fired a shot from the high slot that deflected off a defensman and through goaltender Rob Nolan for a 2-0 advantage.

Tech made it a one-goal game at the 10:19 mark of the second period as Jordan Baker pounded home a rebound in front of SCSU netminder Jase Weslosky. The goal was the second of Baker's career, and assists were credited to John Schwarz and Alex Lord.

The visitors answered right back just 30 seconds later as Nick Oslund scored on a one-timer from between the circles. The score remained 3-1 for the final 9:11 of the second period and 18:46 of the third frame.

Michigan Tech limited St. Cloud to just three shots on goal in the third period while generating nine shots on net. The host Huskies couldn't solve Weslosky, though.

Tech called timeout with 2:38 to play and pulled Nolan from the goal. SCSU gained possession and finished off scoring with an empty netter at the 18:46 mark.

In contrast to Friday's game, only four penalties were called in tonight's contest. St. Cloud was scoreless on three power plays, while Tech went 0-for-1.

"We had a pretty good night defensively," said Russell. "We just didn't create enough chances on offense. We missed an opportunity to get some points this weekend at home. We'll need to work hard to get some on the road next weekend."

Michigan Tech will travel to Minnesota Duluth for a WCHA series next Friday (Nov. 16) and Saturday (Nov. 17). Game times have been set for 8:37 p.m. (ET) both nights.
