HOUGHTON, Mich. Michigan Tech junior Malcolm Gwilliam
recorded career highs in goals (2), assists (3) and points (5) to
pace the Huskies to a 7-1 win to complete the weekend of Minnesota
State.
The seven goals was the most the Black and Gold scored since they
defeated Alaska Anchorage 9-0, Oct. 27, 2006.
Freshman Jordan Baker opened the scoring with his first career goal
at 2:09 in the first period after using some nifty stick work to
get through the Maverick defense.
The Huskies added three more goals in the period to take a 4-0 lead
into the locker room.
Maverick goalie Dan Tormey (0-1-0) was pulled after the first
period after making seven saves and allowing four goals.
Mike Zacharias didn't fair much better as he allowed three goals
while making 16 saves.
After scoring one goal in the second period, Michigan Tech followed
with two in the third, including one by freshman Eric Kattelus. The
goal was the first of the Houghton native's career and he followed
up with a helper on the final goal of the game.
Trevor Bruess spoiled the Michigan Tech shutout when he caught
junior Rob Nolan out of position to score a wrap around goal at
1:43 of the third period.
The Huskies enjoyed a solid night on the power play as they
finished 3-6 (.500). The penalty kill team also did its part as
they held MSU scoreless on the power play (0-4).
Nolan made 35 saves while allowing just one goal in net to pick up
his second win of the season (2-0-0).
"This weekend the team really enjoyed some solid goal tending.
Nolan bounced back great tonight from his performance last
weekend," said head coach Jamie Russell.
Michigan Tech will look to remain atop of the WCHA standings when
they host North Dakota, Oct. 26 and 27.
Notes: The sweep of the Mavericks was the first home sweep since
Feb. 24-25, 2007 when the Huskies swept Wisconsin ... Tech improved
to 7-4-1 in its last 12 games vs. Minnesota State.
