HANCOCK, Mich. - Michigan Tech junior Michael-Lee Teslak made 23
saves to record his fifth career shutout to lead the Huskies to a
2-0 win over Minnesota State in the WCHA opener for both
schools.
Michigan Tech improves to 2-1-0, 1-0-0 on the season while
Minnesota State falls to 0-1-0, 0-1-0.
"Posting a shutout in two games is a great way to start the season.
Confidence is the biggest key to goal tending," said Teslak.
The Mavericks had the first quality scoring play of the night as
junior Jon Kalinski gained control of the puck at the blue line
after a miscue by the Huskies power play unit. He skated in alone
on Teslak and fired a shot that was well wide of the goal.
Junior Alex Lord gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead as he scored through
the five hole off a rebound by sophomore Ryan Bunger for his first
goal of the season.
The Huskies, who enjoyed a 32-23 advantage on shots, put heavy
pressure on the MSU net.
With Maverick goaltender Mike Zacharias on his back, senior Jimmy
Kerr scored at 12:10 in the second period.
Senior Peter Rouleau and freshman Jordan Baker assisted on the
goal.
"The puck took a great bounce and I banged it home on an empty
net," said Kerr on his second goal of the season.
Maverick goalie Mike Zacharias allowed two goals and made 30 saves
in the loss.
The Huskies finished the night 0-6 on the power play while the
Mavericks were 0-7.
"I thought both that both teams did really well on the power play
tonight," said Michigan Tech head coach Jamie Russell.
The two teams will square off again Saturday (Oct. 20) at 7:07
p.m.
