Wysocky and Stream Both Score 20 Points
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Despite 20-point efforts from both Sarah
Stream and Katie Wysocky, Michigan Tech was defeated by Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Lake Superior State
today, 73-64. The game was a battle of the top two teams in the
GLIAC North Division, and the Lakers (10-3, 6-0 GLIAC) remained on
top of the standings with the win.
Wysocky scored 10 of the Huskies' first 13 points en route to a
13-6 advantage at the 13:25 mark. She picked up two quick fouls,
though, and sat out the rest of the half. LSSU proceeded on a 9-2
run to tie the game at 15 with 10:07 to play in the half. Katie
Zimmerman's free throw gave Tech a 31-30 edge. However, Lake
State's Mandi Johnson made the lead change hands for the fifth time
in the half with a jumper from the left elbow as the buzzer
sounded. The halftime scoreboard read 32-31.
The Lakers scored 16 seconds into the second half and led the rest
of the way. Alicia Schneider's free throws at the 13:46 mark cut
Tech's deficit to 43-42 before another 9-2 Lake Superior State
spurt.
Wysocky made three straight layups all off Stream assists to trim
the gap to 58-54 with 4:31 to play. LSSU answered with two
three-pointers over the next 1:15 to maintain control. The Lakers
then made seven-of-eight free throws to secure the victory.
Johnson had game highs of 27 points and 11 rebounds for the
visitors, who shot 47 percent from the floor in the game. Tech
connected on 41 percent from the field including one-of-nine
three-pointers.
Michigan Tech kept itself in the game with 25 made free throws on
30 attempts (83 percent), but was outrebounded, 34-30.
Wysocky's 20 points came in 26 minutes of action and was one short
of her career high of 21. Stream matched a season high with her 20
points. She also finished with four assists. Schneider tallied a
team-high nine rebounds to go with four points and two assists.
Tech (10-4, 5-2 GLIAC) will play a non-conference game against
Northland at the SDC Gym on Tuesday (Jan. 9) at 5:30 p.m.
