DETROIT, Mich. -- Michigan Tech held Wayne State to a -.019
hitting percentage and increased its own attack percentage in each
game to pave the way for a 3-0 (30-22, 30-22, 30-20) victory in
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball
competition Saturday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 8-9 overall
and 4-4 in the GLIAC, while the Warriors saw their record drop to
1-14 overall and 1-9 in league play.
"We started with quite a few unforced errors, but we improved as
the match went on," said head coach Krista Mikesch. "Overall, it
was a great day for us because we were able to give everyone a
chance to play. Now we have to turn it up a notch as we get ready
to take on a very strong Hillsdale team."
Sophomore Veronica Armstrong (Battle Creek, Mich./Central) led the
Huskies with nine kills off a .353 hitting percentage, while also
picking up eight digs. Sophomore Christa Jung (Andover, Minn./Coon
Rapids) compiled a team-best .368 hitting percentage with eight
kills and two block assists. Redshirt freshman Kelly Jorgensen
(Eden Prairie, Minn.) added five kills, six block assists and one
block solo.
Rookie Ellen Sherry (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo) contributed five
kills and two block assists off the bench.
Senior Amanda Mackenthun (Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran)
distributed 16 assists and freshman Alison Greene (Andover,
Minn./Totino Grace) doled out 10 helpers.
Sophomore Kelsey Skoog (Long Lake, Minn./Orono) led all players
with 15 digs.
Tech registered a 10-9 advantage in blocks and a 34-22 edge in
assists.
The Huskies take on undefeated and 10th-ranked Hillsdale (18-0, 9-0
GLIAC) Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
