Huskies End Season at GLIAC Tournament
MIDLAND, Mich. -- The 2005-06 Michigan Tech men's tennis season
came to an end today in the Great Lakes intercollegiate Athletic
Conference Tournament where the seventh-seeded Huskies were upset
by the eighth-seeded Findlay Oilers, 5-3.
The result was a different one from when the teams squared off in
Houghton earlier this month. In that match, Tech swept all three
doubles matches en route to a 6-3 triumph.
Today, it was Findlay gaining an edge in doubles by winning two of
the three matches. MTU's Brett Girard and Rick Halverson combined
to claim an 8-4 win at number one doubles. UF won number two and
three doubles by 8-3 and 8-6 decisions, respectively.
Girard was a straight set winner at number one singles, 6-0, 7-6
(0), as was fellow freshman Rajiv Nanjundareddy, who triumphed,
6-1, 6-2 at number two singles. The Oilers won at numbers three,
four and five singles to end the match before the number six
singles match could be decided.
Girard led all Huskies in singles wins on the year with seven.
Nanjundareddy tallied five. In doubles, Girard and Halverson put
together a team-best six victories.
Michigan Tech (3-16) will lose just one senior from the squad for
next year.
